Toxicology of Galactose
As a micronutrient, galactose is not toxic (harmful, poisonous), as long as no galactosemia, a serious but very rare metabolic disorder, is present.
In Europe and many other countries, infants are tested for galactosemia on the third day after birth, so it does not go undetected. It occurs in 1 out of 55,000 individuals.
For more about galactosemia, see Pharmacology of Galactose
If an infant or toddler has not been tested for this milk intolerance, galactose should only be given after consultation with a physician.
